Volunteer with Betty’s Book Buddies and be a part of enriching the lives of children through reading!
Families treated at ACH face adversity that causes their child(ren) to struggle with behavioral issues and/or developmental delays. Reading with children, placing a value on literacy, and increasing exposure to books are critical ways that volunteers can positively influence our children’s early literacy development.
These experiences build self-esteem and improve social/emotional development by increasing a child’s ability to effectively communicate emotions, solve problems and develop relationships with others – all important aspects of healing therapy. Recognizing this, ACH is stepping up its efforts to create opportunities for the children we serve to be introduced to books and experience the joy and benefits of reading – with volunteer mentors and with their caregivers.
We have created an exciting new program called Betty’s Book Buddies and we need your help! Named after beloved, long-time Greenvillian and ACH volunteer, Betty Farr, who has shared her love of books and reading with children all over Greenville for years, the goals of the program are:
Program Goals
Volunteers are asked to commit up to one hour per week to read to children on-site at A Child’s Haven. Each new Betty’s Book Buddies Volunteer must attend an orientation and pass a background check before they begin.
Volunteers will learn the protocols of the program during orientation and receive a special t-shirt to wear while volunteering. You will also learn more about other aspects of the program, such as incentives offered to children and families to encourage reading at home and ACH’s growing partnership with the Greenville County Library system.
Thank you for considering being a part of this important program that is certain to make an indelible impact in the lives of vulnerable children served by A Child’s Haven and their families!
