Maddie was 4 years old when she enrolled at A Child’s Haven. She arrived with a diagnosis of a stress-related disorder and struggled with developmental delays caused by a whirlwind of trauma Maddie endured since birth. This included being abandoned by her biological mother and having multiple caregivers thereafter, which resulted in Maddie being unable to establish a secure attachment with anyone in her life until being placed in the custody of her grandparents.
Maddie initially struggled seeking comfort when distressed and accepting comfort from others. She would frequently become irritable, sad, or fearful out of the blue in non-threatening situations. Maddie also lacked self-worth.
As you can imagine, helping Maddie succeed was a challenge for her grandparents because she demonstrated a wide variety of misbehavior. Participating in home visitation sessions with their family support counselor and attending the parent support group classes offered by A Child’s Haven helped equip Maddie’s grandparents with the tools they needed to support her.
After a year and a half of treatment at A Child’s Haven, Maddie was able to verbalize her feelings, develop secure relationships with staff and family members, and self-regulate her doubts and fears. Maddie successfully discharged from our program and today she attends kindergarten.
