You Can Bring Hope & Transformation to Greenville’s Children in Crisis

A Child’s Haven is the Upstate’s only comprehensive treatment program for children who have been traumatized by poverty, neglect and abuse. Within all of our current facilities, we have the capacity to transform 77 children and families at any given time, including 47 at our Main Center.

The Challenge

A Child’s Haven has capacity for less than 20% of Greenville’s children under age six with confirmed cases of neglect or abuse, as tracked by the Department of Social Services. There are no comprehensive treatment options available for the other 80%. And due to building code requirements, we are currently unable to treat the youngest, most vulnerable children under age two.

In response to the great need for services, our Board of Directors, Advisory Council and Staff have resolved to double the treatment capacity of our program by 2010.

The Opportunity

To accomplish this goal, we have purchased the old Armstrong Elementary School off Highway 25 in Berea. It’s a building that sits atop a hillside of twelve acres, with a view towards a wooded valley and a future full of promise for the children in our care.

Generous lead gifts have enabled us to purchase this building and property debt-free. Now, with your help, we will transform this building into our new Main Center with treatment capacity for 105 children and families, including infants for the first time.

A Child’s Haven at the Tunky Riley Campus will be the largest comprehensive treatment center in the Southeastern United States for neglected and abused children. It will also serve as a major training center and launch pad for replica programs across South Carolina and the Southeast.

The total cost to purchase the property, renovate the building and equip it to our purposes is $ 6.2 million. We can use much of what the old school building has to offer, and will save money compared to an all-new building with the same benefits. A Child’s Haven is also raising $ 1.1 million in endowment funds, for the permanent maintenance of the facility and property. This brings our total campaign goal to $ 7.3 million.
